Solar power generation and photovoltaic power generation are one of the two most popular electric power generation methods in modern society. Many people may confuse them and think they are the same. In fact, they are two methods of power generation with different characteristics. Today, I’m going to tell you the difference.
First: Definition
Solar power generation refers to the use of solar energy to convert solar radiation into electricity, through the inverter and other equipment output to AC power process, the use of technology including thermal energy utilization and light energy utilization. Solar power is one of the most mature renewable energy sources, and it does not emit any pollutants and is harmless to the environment.
Photovoltaic power generation refers to the process of converting solar radiant energy directly into electrical energy by using the change in the charge nature of solar energy. In order to convert this light into electricity, photovoltaic panels need to be placed in the photovoltaic power generation system. Photovoltaic panels are made of semiconductor materials that can directly convert solar energy into electricity, such as silicon, gallium, and arsenic.
Second: Device
Solar power is usually generated by setting up collectors, inverters and other devices on the ground or roof, and converting the collected energy into electrical energy output to the grid system. These collectors are generally made of specially treated reflective materials, which can convert the sun’s radiant energy into heat energy, and then convert it into electrical energy through thermal mechanical work.
Photovoltaic power generation usually needs to be placed on the roof or ground of houses, garages, factories and other places. Photovoltaic power generation systems also require equipment such as inverters to convert the collected energy into electricity and output it to the grid.
Number three: Efficiency
With regard to efficiency, photovoltaic power generation has several advantages. First, photovoltaic panels are simple to install, have a small footprint, and they can be mass-produced and used in large photovoltaic sites. Second, the conversion efficiency of photovoltaic panels is getting higher and higher, and many companies are improving the existing technology to improve the conversion efficiency.
Solar power costs less than photovoltaic power because this technology requires less maintenance and its collector costs are lower. Still, solar power is not as efficient as photovoltaic power, and this technology requires a larger space to house equipment.
Fourth: Scope of application
Whether it is solar power or photovoltaic power generation, the way they are used is very flexible. According to research, photovoltaic power generation is most suitable for use in places with good shading conditions, and is not suitable for installation in places with shadows. Solar power, on the other hand, is more suitable for use in more open areas because it does not require much shade or shading.
Finally, we can see that solar power generation and photovoltaic power generation are one of the current environmentally friendly power generation methods, with their own advantages and disadvantages. No matter what kind of electricity generation method, we should work harder to use them and make our own contribution to our environment.
